General Policies - Please Read
The Laboratory provides microarray and genomic technologies at an affordable cost to Caltech scientists. Prices and user fees account for the cost of reagents and consumables and for minimal fees to help maintain the Laboratory's equipment.
The Laboratory is supported by the Millard and Muriel Jacobs Family Foundation. Under the agreement between Caltech and the Foundation, "Caltech, faculty and staff will acknowledge the Laboratory by name in papers, publications, or other print or electronic media arising from research involving the work of the Laboratory". It is thus requested that every paper from Caltech that involves data or work from the Laboratory carries an appropriate acknowledgement sentence (for example, a simple sentence in the acknowledgements section of the paper, such as: "This work was supported by..., and by the Millard and Muriel Jacobs Genetics and Genomics Laboratory at California Institute of Technology").
User fees do not currently cover the cost of equipment usage and people's time. The purpose of the fees, which we are introducing gradually, is to allow Caltech researchers to access genomic technologies without substantial upfront costs. Over time, fees will be raised gradually to decrease the dependency of the Laboratory's operations on the funds provided by the Millard and Muriel Jacobs Family Foundation. It is thus recommended that when writing grant proposals that include microarray experiments, the budget is calculated with costs that are more realistic than those from our current highly subsidized price list below. Please contact us if you need help or additional information about microarray experimental costs.
Price List - 2006
Prices in this list might be subject to revision:
if changes in the prices of microarrays or associated consumables that are supplied by commercial vendors occur, or
if the experimental methods and protocols that we use are modified.

Chips and microarrays: | |
- Affymetrix:
We purchase Affymetrix GeneChips under a discount agreement between Caltech and Affymetrix. The agreement is open to all Caltech personnel (i.e., the price is the same regardless of whether we or the user lab purchase the chips). Affymetrix GeneChips vary in price by organism and layout, and currently are between $175 and $400. Please ask us for details.
- In-house printed two-color arrays:
We manufacture glass arrays using Operon's genome oligonucleotide sets (Array-Ready Oligo Sets). We currently have available mouse and yeast microarrays.
- Yeast microarray: $30/each
- Mouse microarray: $55/each
